WALKING MATILDA is an
Australian-based company specialising in walking, wildlife
and cultural journeys within Australia and internationally.
We only take small groups, employ skilled leaders,
and have a strong commitment to preserving the cultural
and environmental values of the places we visit. We
also employ local guides and experts as required for
sections of some tours.
Walking Matilda is directed by Peter Kellett, an outdoor
educator with over thirty years experience in organizing
and leading groups on walking holidays, nature-based
expeditions and cultural tours. Peter trained as an
historian before turning to outdoor education in 1978.
He pioneered many of the tour itineraries that are now
used by other companies.
Each year Walking Matilda offers a small range of tours
for the active, interested traveller. These are posted
on our website and also promoted to our mailing list
twice each year via email. If you would like to receive
further information in this way, please subscribe to
our free newsletters. You will see what is being planned
up to three years ahead.
So who was Matilda? This was one of the names for the
bedroll carried by swagmen and itinerant rural workers
in Australia. Waltzing Matilda therefore
meant to walk the tracks and trails of the country,
usually looking for work, with the essentials of bedroll
and billy can. Over the years Waltzing Matilda became
an unofficial national song for many Australians. On
our walks we won't need to carry much at all, but you
could get to camp by a billabong.
We hope you find a journey that interests you.
