The Camino is the Spanish name for the historic Pilgrims'
Way which terminates in Santiago de Compostela. This
is the final stage and those who walk this section are
entitled to the Pilgrim's Certificate.
Pilgrims have crossed this area for over 1,000 years,
travelling from all over Europe, over the Pyrenees on
their way to the magnificent church and shrine at Santiago
de Compostela in north-western Spain. We follow parts
of this ancient but still used path. This is a walk
through history, culture and lovely Spanish countryside,
staying in small towns and villages as we go. We walk
between three and six hours each day, allowing plenty
of time to appreciate our surroundings. In this final
stage it passes through the lush green farmlands of
Galicia, a region of Spain with strong cultural traditions
and cuisine. The country is undulating and walking paths
are firm. The towns and villages along the route have
been welcoming pilgrims for a millennium, and there
are churches, monasteries and ancient pilgrims' hospitals
(hostels) scattered through the area. Santiago's old
town is now a UNESCO world Heritage Site and the magnificent
cathedral is said to contain the relics of the Apostle,
St James.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Sarria
Sarria is a modern riverside town with an old quarter.
There are some medieval buildings, a castle, and antique
shops. Overnight Sarria (DBB)
Day 2: Walk Sarria - Portomarin (23.2kms)
The walk between Sarria and Portomarin is one of the
quietest and most peaceful of the Camino. The path passes
into wine country and Portomarin is famous for its brandy.
The town also has some important Romanesque buildings.
Overnight Portmarin (DBB)
Day 3: Walk Portomarin - Palas de Rei (24.8kms)
There are a few miles of road walking along this stretch
but the roads are quiet. We pass through some small
interesting villages; Gonzar with a Romanesque Church
and Ligonde. Overnight in Palas de Rei (DBB)
Day 4: Walk Palas de Rei - Arzua (28.8kms)
The route takes us through Melide, a pleasant town with
a former monastery church, and a pilgrim hospital. Two
more significant churches as we leave the town. Overnight
Arzua (DBB)
Day 5: Walk Arzua - Lavacolla (28kms)
The route continues to the small village of Lavacolla.
Traditionally this is where pilgrims used to cleanse
themselves before the final walk into Santiago de Compostela.
Overnight Lavacolla (DBB)
Day 6: Walk Lavacolla - Santiago (12kms)
The last day's walk is short so pilgrims can arrive
in the Plaza de Obradoiro and enter the Cathedral by
midday when the pilgrims are blessed. Time this afternoon
to explore other parts of Santiago's old town. Overnight
Santiago (B&B)
Day 7: End of the tour after breakfast
