The Chowilla wetlands are a series of quiet backwaters
of the mighty Murray River where the three state borders
of Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia meet.
River flow is very slow and safe; ideal conditions for
novice canoeists. The many channels are lined with huge
river red-gums, some of which bear ancient scars where
Aboriginal people used stone axes to make bark canoes.
The area is an important wetland reserve and home to
thousands of water birds.
We teach you the basic skills of canoeing, before setting
off with our camping gear and food on board, to camp
beside a billabong, just like that swagman.
Itinerary
Day 1
Depart Adelaide and travel to the Riverland via Blanchetown,
where you will first see the Murray River. Our destination
is the Chowilla region upstream from Renmark. The journey
will take approximately 3.5 hours. After a training
session and lunch we will pack the canoes and set off
to explore the backwaters. We camp beside a quiet billabong.
Days 2 & 3
On these days we explore some of the many channels of
this significant wetland region, stopping at some of
our favourite campsites along the way. The pace is relaxed,
allowing plenty of time for bird-watching, fishing or
swimming.
Day 4
After a leisurely breakfast we paddle back to our vehicle
to unload. We aim to finish our paddling by about 12.00pm,
have lunch and return to Adelaide by around 5.00pm.
