WALKING MATILDA NEWS: Email Newsletter, September, 2011

Something old and some things new in 2012!
WALKING IN THE FRENCH PYRENEES: An 'old' favourite.
We have been running this trip with Dave Best for nine years now. We will again be based in a renovated Basque farmhouse set in the foothills of the Western Pyrenees. This is the area known as the Pays Basque - the country of the Basques. Beautiful farmland, rich valleys with fast flowing streams, beech forests, and ancient villages and cultural sites are the destinations of our walks. We will discover all these as we walk sections of the GR10, the famous long distance footpath that follows the Pyrenees from Atlantic to Mediterranean. Pilgrims have crossed this area for over 1000 years, traveling from all over Europe, over the Pyrenees on their way to the magnificent church and shrine at Santiago de Compostela in north-western Spain. We will be going twice in 2012; 29 May - 5 June, 2012, for the late Spring flowers, and 29 September - 6 October, 2012, for the Autumn colours.
$2,380.00 to $2,530.00 per person twin/share. Single supplement $550.00

Walking trails, including some of the GR (long distance) paths, link ancient villages, chateaux, vineyards, riversides and oak forest. We stay in a selected holiday house near the junction of the Dordogne and the Vézère, setting off each day to explore this delightful region.

ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON WALK: New in 2012!
In September, 1878, the young Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, set out on foot from Monastier sur Gazeille in the Haute-Loire with his donkey Modestine. 12 days, 220 kms and many adventures later, he arrived at Saint Jean de Gard. He had a twofold objective - to try and forget his love for Fanny Osbourne, the beautiful American woman who he in fact eventually married some years later - and to explore the countryside of the Camisards, the French Protestants, from the rugged and isolated Cévennes region of southern France.
He wrote an amusing account of his journey and a long distance footpath (GR 70) has been devised with the object of letting us walk in Stevenson's footsteps. We will read about Stevenson's adventures as we have our own.
14-27 May, 2012: $3,690.00 per person twin/share. Single supplement $425.00
