In AD 122, when the Roman Emperor Hadrian ordered that a wall be built across the north of England to keep out the barbarians, he didn't know that he was also establishing a famous walking trail. His wall passes through superb walking country and in 2003 the Hadrian's Wall Path became one of Britain's National Trails. The Wall also has a World Heritage Listing. We will follow in the footsteps of those ancient legions who tried to defend the borders of the Roman Empire. We will explore the ruins of their forts, houses, temples and bath-houses on our way. Our path takes us across Tynedale, through the Northumberland National Park and the Eden Valley to Carlisle, dominated by its Norman castle. We stay in cosy inns and B&Bs in quaint villages and our luggage is transferred while we walk.
